A hollow cone lets the smoke run downward over the piece instead of rising, so it pools and falls like water. On a straight holder the ash falls into the tray instead of onto the shelf.
Light the tip, let it catch, then blow the flame out so it glows. Place it on the plate and keep the piece away from a draft, which is what breaks the fall of the smoke.
Never leave burning incense unattended. Use on a heat resistant surface, away from curtains and drafts. Let the piece cool completely before you handle or clean it.
